joyful paintings by Donna deVries Buchan
about my art
The heartfelt stuff

I rarely paint the same image twice, though you will see recurring themes that will
continue to touch my heart - I hope they will touch your heart as well. You'll notice that
paintings are often described by a short piece of prose - this will give you an idea of
how deeply I feel for the subjects I paint.

Every image is inspired by experience. I may use a photograph to provide information
which may otherwise be fleeting - a captured sunset, a swift-moving shadow or sparkle
of light on water - but the end result is always an impression of a specific experience
rather than a photographic reproduction.
The technical stuff

"Original" really does mean you're getting a one-of-a-kind item - no one else will own
anything like it, now or ever!

Watercolours - I always paint with artist-quality pigments on 100% cotton paper,
generally Waterford by Saunders, or Arches. Though I may make a separate sketch to
compose an idea, the final piece of art is spontaneous. Most of my watercolours are
created using a limited palette of as few as three colours, and usually no more than five.

Acrylics and Oils - Again, I use a limited palette of colours, with only artist-quality
pigments and mediums - in most cases, professional grade acrylics and mediums by
Golden and M. Graham, acrylic gouache by Holbein, oils by Grumbacher and Lukas.
These works are produced on professional quality stretched canvas or canvas panels,
or in the case of some acrylics, on triple-sealed pressed board. These paintings are
given a final coat of protective varnish which is removable for cleaning and restoration
purposes. Varnish properties are stated on the back of each painting. Acrylics on
watercolour paper are not varnished and should be treated as watercolours - matted
and framed under glass. Acrylics with inclusions such as gemstones are sealed for
longevity and do not require framing behind glass.

Framing - where framing is included, frames are specially chosen and professionally
assembled. Frames are described in the Shopping Cart - if in doubt, please ask for a
photo of the framed image. Framing is always optional - please
contact me for details.

Limited Edition Prints are fine-art quality ink jet prints made by the artist on 100%
cotton *archival Stonehenge paper. I only make 50 prints of each piece, then they're all
gone!

Art Cards - are fine-art quality single-fold cards, 5 1/2" X 4 1/4", made by the artist on
professional card stock. Available in most images, minimum quantities of 6 per image,
blank inside for your own greeting, with envelopes. Suitable for framing!

*Archival means the artwork has an expected life of 100 years under gallery conditions.
Let me know if it lasts longer - I'll bet it will!  But remember - in the case of prints or
watercolours, even pigments claiming to be "light-fast" may fade over time with
prolonged exposure to ultraviolet light (daylight).
